Grounds Maintenance Staff Person

Job Type: Full-time/Seasonal (May – September, negotiable)
Pay: $20.00 – $25.00 per hour, based on experience 
Reports to: Van der Brohe Arboretum Director

Organizational Overview

The Van der Brohe Arboretum is engaged in the conversion of a former 65-acre golf course into an ecological center focused on providing an environment for the cultivation and display of the variety of tree types and species which will be suitable for the location in Two Rivers, WI. The Arboretum intimately links visitors with the natural environment through grounds, exhibitions, and programming.

Position Summary

As Van der Brohe Arboretum is a new and evolving organization, this position offers the right individual an opportunity to be instrumental in assisting with the creating and maintaining of a valuable natural area in Northeast Wisconsin. The person selected for this position will be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of The Arboretum grounds. Duties and Responsibilities 

  1. Maintain tree inventory – includes the protection, planting, updating GIS database and maintenance protocols.
  2. Maintain gardens – includes planting, edging and protection of plants.
  3. Maintain existing irrigation system and extend system as needed.
  4. Maintain trails – gravel distribution, grooming and culverts.
  5. Control invasive and nuisance species
  6. Maintain grounds – mowing and tilling.
  7. Police grounds for debris and trash
  8. Maintain benches and other installations. 
  9. Cut dead and dying trees – inoculate Ash trees as directed.
  10. Operate and maintain equipment – includes vehicles and a variety of power driven and hand tools.
  11. Monitor and maintain Avian support structures.
  12. Erect installations as per Sponsorship 
  13. Additional ground-related duties as assigned. 

Qualifications 

  1. Interest in conservation and silviculture.
  2. Ability to follow detailed instructions.
  3. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  4. Physical strength and stamina, ability to perform heavy manual labor – must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  5. Eagerness to learn, ability to solve problems and work independently.
  6. Knowledge of the operation of trucks, tractors, and a variety of power-driven equipment
  7. Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver’s license.
  8. Candidate must be authorized to work lawfully in the USA.
