Dave Villeneuve, Housing Authority Director at Van der Brohe Aboretum, recently built and installed a pair of Wood Duck houses on the arboretum grounds.
Dave has also installed 16 Bluebird houses just in time for the 2020 spring nesting season.
About the Wood Duck
The wood duck may very well be Wisconsin’s most beautiful duck. These ducks are uniquely shaped with a boxy, crested head, a thin neck, short wings, and a long, broad tail.
Males have a glossy green head with bright white stripes, and a chestnut-colored breast. Females and juveniles are grayish-brown with white-speckled breast. In late summer, males lose their bold stripes, but can still be identified by the bright eye and bill.
Wood Ducks perch and nest in trees and are comfortable flying through woods. They also take readily to nest boxes.
